How Much Does Making Distilled Water Cost? There’s Cheap and cheaper

If you want to enjoy the benefits of distilled water, you might be wondering how much it costs to make it at home. In this article, we will compare the costs of making distilled water with a water distiller versus buying bottled water from the store. You might be surprised by how much you can save by distilling your own water.

What is a Water Distiller?

A water distiller is a device that boils water and collects the pure steam in a container. The steam leaves behind any impurities, such as minerals, chemicals, bacteria, and viruses. The result is distilled water, which is the purest form of water you can drink.

There are different types of water distillers available, such as countertop, under-sink, or whole-house models. They vary in size, capacity, speed, efficiency, and features. Some are fully automatic and can refill themselves from a water source, while others require manual filling and emptying.

How Much Does a Water Distiller Cost?

The cost of a water distiller depends on the type, brand, and quality of the device. A basic countertop water distiller that produces one gallon of distilled water per cycle can cost anywhere from $100 to $200. Some have a sleek metal design and a glass carafe, while others have a simple white plastic body and a BPA-free jug.

For this example, let’s assume you buy a mid-range countertop water distiller for $150. This distiller can make one gallon of distilled water in five hours and use up to 0.6 kWh of electricity. If you pay 10 cents per kWh for your electricity bill, that means it costs you about 30 cents to make one gallon of distilled water.

One gallon of distilled water equals 128 fluid ounces, which can fill up 10.67 plastic bottles of 12 fl. oz each. That means each bottle of distilled water you make at home costs you about 2.8 cents. If you make two gallons of distilled water per day for a year, and your distiller breaks down after three years and needs to be replaced, that means each bottle of distilled water you make at home costs you about 3.5 cents.

How Much Does Bottled Water Cost?

Now, let’s compare the cost of making distilled water at home with buying bottled water from the store. First of all, you should know that most bottled water is not distilled water. It is either spring water, purified water, or mineral water, which may contain various contaminants and additives that are not good for your health. If you want to buy bottled distilled water, you will have to look for specific brands that label their products as such.

The price of bottled water varies depending on the brand, size, and quantity. A typical 12 fl. oz bottle of spring or purified water can cost anywhere from 25 cents to $1 or more. A 12 fl. oz bottle of distilled water can cost anywhere from 50 cents to $2 or more.

For this example, let’s assume you buy a 12 fl. oz bottle of spring or purified water for 50 cents. That means you are paying about 4.2 cents per fluid ounce of bottled water. If you drink two gallons of bottled water per day for a year, that means you are spending about $1,533 per year on bottled water. As you can see, buying bottled water is a terrible idea.

The Bottom Line

As you can see, making distilled water at home with a water distiller is much cheaper than buying bottled water from the store. Not only that, but you also get to enjoy the purest and healthiest form of water possible. Distilled water has many benefits for your body and mind, such as detoxifying your system, improving your skin and hair, boosting your immunity and energy levels, and preventing diseases.
