Distilled Water vs Purified Water: Which One is Better?

If you are looking for the best water to drink for your health and wellness, you might be confused by the different types of bottled water available in the supermarket. You might have seen distilled water bottles and wondered what they are and how they differ from purified water bottles. In this article, we will explain the difference between distilled water and purified water, and help you decide which one is better for you.

What is Distilled Water?

Distilled water is water that has gone through the distillation process, which involves boiling the water and collecting the pure steam in a separate container. The steam leaves behind any impurities, such as chemicals, minerals, bacteria, and viruses, that were present in the original water source. The result is distilled water, which is the purest form of water you can drink.

Distilled water has many benefits for your body and mind, such as:

  • Detoxifying your system from harmful substances
  • Improving your skin and hair quality
  • Boosting your immunity and energy levels
  • Preventing diseases and infections
  • Enhancing your mental clarity and focus

You can make your own distilled water at home with a water distiller, which is cheaper and safer than buying bottled distilled water.

What is Purified Water?

Purified water is water that has gone through various filtration or purification methods to remove impurities and contaminants from it. There are different types of purification methods, such as reverse osmosis, carbon filtration, ultraviolet disinfection, ozonation, etc. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of effectiveness, cost, and environmental impact.

Purified water has some benefits for your health and environment, such as:

  • Reducing the risk of exposure to harmful substances
  • Improving the taste and odor of the water
  • Being cheaper and more accessible than distilled water
  • Being more eco-friendly than bottled water

However, purified water also has some drawbacks, such as:

  • Not removing all impurities and contaminants from the water
  • Losing some beneficial minerals and electrolytes during the purification process
  • Being susceptible to recontamination during storage or transportation
  • Being regulated by different standards and labels depending on the source and method of purification
  • High cost of filters, which need constant replacing

One of the most common types of purified water is bottled water. However, not all bottled water is created equal. Some bottled water brands claim to be purified but are actually just tap water that has gone through minimal filtration or treatment. Some bottled water brands use plastic bottles that can leach chemicals into the water or pollute the environment. Some bottled water brands are misleading or deceptive about their source or quality of their water.

For example, many people think that Aquafina is distilled water because it says it is purified. However, Aquafina is not distilled water because it does not use boiling as part of its purification process. Instead, it uses reverse osmosis and ultraviolet rays to remove some impurities and organic matter from its water. However, it still contains microscopic amounts of minerals and contaminants that are may not removed by these methods. Also, Aquafina’s source is tap water from various municipal sources around the country. Therefore, it is not the purest or safest form of water you can drink, although, pretty close to it after going through the reverse osmosis treatment.

The Bottom Line

So, which one is better: distilled water or purified water? The answer depends on your personal preference, budget, and health goals. Distilled water is the purest form of water you can drink but it also lacks minerals and electrolytes that your body actually do NOT need because you can easily get them in foods (and if you want to, you can always add minerals to distilled water). Purified water is less pure but more convenient since it’s faster to make but it’s not as affordable as distilled water. However, you have to be careful about the source and quality of purified water you choose.

If you want to enjoy the benefits of both distilled water and purified water, you can do so by adding minerals to distilled water or by using a high-quality filter or purifier for your tap water. You can also make your own distilled water at home with a simple device called a water distiller. This way, you can save money and protect your health and environment at the same time.
